Fencing footage, 1887-1987, hopefully of some historical interest. My thanks to all those who have encouraged me in this endeavor.
1977 Les qualité de l'escrimeur
1977. French. "Fencing in France, a sport that owes a lot to swashbuckling novels."
In the INA archives, a report from France 3 Limoges from 1977, broadcast in the program “Sports from 5 to 15”, gave the floor to a fencing master, who evoked the cultural roots of the French attraction for fencing: “ [The practice of] fencing [comes] through knowledge especially of swashbuckling films that children see on television, in the cinema, they are made aware of [this culture] and come often in fencing. Or at school they often talk about it, someone has done fencing, they come first to see how it's done, and then, little by little, they come to the club. »
According to this professional of this sport, there would therefore be a cultural persistence of a practice which has taken place for many centuries in France, this is what the author of the report summarizes, asking: “ Who d 'among us as children never dreamed of fighting on the Pré aux Clercs [a field today located in the 7th arrondissement which was used under the Ancien Régime as an ideal field for duels between nobles, Editor's note], like the it was said in the 17th century, who among us adults has not envied the skill of the fabulous characters of Alexandre Dumas […], always sword in hand in defense of the weak and the oppressed. The sword, the foil, the sabre, noble weapons which have retained a certain appeal in France for centuries.”
The report then focuses on the qualities required to become a good fencer. According to the fencing master, this sport requires many qualities, both muscular and nervous, and it can be practiced from the age of 7. “ In the past,” he explains, “we started later, we started around the age of 9, 10. Now we start them early, because it takes at least 4 to 5 years to train a good fencer who can compete nationally. »

Are these guys brain dead? All such a thing proves is who is the most skilful not who's right or wrong. Well such things get expanded and are called wars.
I slap you with my glove!
From the pre fight it looked very much like the man in the glasses was the most vexed, and looked the most confident. I got the impression the other guy would have been happier to say "look let's forget about all this eh old chap?" Or the French equivalent. Proved true as the glasses 🕶 wins and other fellow seems happy to call it a day. I'd like to know what led to the whole thing 🤔
Why did they fight?
It's in the description
@@schlager7 why did they duel? An insult?
@@fernandoromero9906 Since no one can be bothered to read the description... "Rozier challenged Chalais to the duel after brooding for months over the critic's assertion that a certain actress' "career was behind her."
Love it! Brings back fond, fond memories. That was my vintage, during the time when I was persuing the brevet of prevot and maitre d'armes. Classical fencing, oh how things have changed, and not necessarily for the better
Epee wouldn’t be my choice. Sabers would be my first choice. If dueling is allowed today, with the firm rule that forbids professional duelers who stand in for one of the men, there will be fewer cowardly trolls insulting another man on social media and in person, because the troll knows that the moment he insults another without provocation, he better back it up with his life.
Douglas MacArthur looked the suaver as well
Let’s have one between Biden and Trump
Here in Brazil, guys duel to the death but it's with a machete 😂😂😂😂
Super ! ✌️😃♥️
Teaching the boy to deal with feints. Good stuff. It's also interesting to see the little touches of humour at the end. (when he falls down & plays dead for the camera). Lol
Whoops-a-daisy
Too many dudes touching tips
thought I was going to be watching a bloke selling dodgy merchandise !
Do you have satisfaction?
What was the outcome? Obviously the man on the bottom of the screen took a couple.
When you get the sh!t beat out of you by a street fighter, you know you wasted your time on fencing. This is like bad comedy, ridiculous
Horrible camera man
Didn't Cassagnac die in 1904?

These scenes are repeated on the streets of London almost daily
Wearing sunglasses so the opponent can't read your eyes. Nice......
Also eye protection me thinks.
Alors merci monsieur.
ça m'a pris 5 secondes.
fantasme de censure , on le trouve facilement.
A pair of jackasses.
What is interesting is the difference between this kind of dueling style and sport fencing. Because in sport fencing they attack more or less straight away because there is no risk of getting hurt.
Nordman is not displaying any fencing skill at all, however his opponent Vignancourt is still facing a long sharp knife.
Damn, even in the most based times France looks pretty gay
This is how American presidency should be conducted
All of this sounds gay😊
Bring back dueling and watch how quickly the assholes tighten up.
They were dueling in 1967...?
Red hot pokers. 👍🏻
Im so confused. If this is france, how come there are two men engaged in combat without either waving a white flag or switching teams during the fight?
In Germany students engage in "Mensur" and same goal is first blood and the duel ends. However first blood is a bit more than a scratch and results in most cases ina scar which is hold as a batch of honor
Kinda like what's going on in the Holy Land with all the button down suits calmy on the sidelines watching.
After this I hope that the sound engineer was fired....
I spent a lot of time there as a child (a few years after this was filmed). It was wonderful hearing his voice and seeing his place. In addition to Polly, I recognized a couple of the faces behind masks in this video. Thank you so much for posting it! The community at his fencing studio was wonderful; the garden was an oasis; and Mr. Faulkner was, for a few years, like the grandfather I never had.
Im pretty sure all these guys in the video are all dead
No shit-
really stupid people
Nothing more manly than 2 bros rubbing swords.
